Project
Kakuma Refugee ICT Hub /
Innovative solutions to human crises
We delivered a solar-powered information technology hub in Kakuma refugee camp in north-western Kenya. The camp houses some 185,000 people, many of whom have fled conflict in nearby South Sudan. As well as giving energy access to the community, the hub provides a space for learning opportunities. These include formal education, vocational training and life skills. The hub is broadening access to low-cost, clean and reliable energy for services such as education, charging personal devices, business and entertainment.
Our approach:
- Designing a replicable and easy-to-build solar ICT hub
- Guaranteeing equal access for all genders, both the host and refugee communities, and youth
- Creating a space to build relationships in the community, through events such as screening films and football matches
