Modernising Ghana’s revenue system /

Modern tax collection systems save time and money

Crown Agents helped Ghana modernise its revenue system to drive efficiency and boost tax revenues as part of a streamlining drive across government.

Four government tax services – Large Taxpayer’s Unit, IRS, Value Added Tax and Customs – have been amalgamated into one Ghana Revenue Authority meaning lower admin costs, a more citizen-friendly service and higher productivity.

Our approach:

  • Installing and integrating bespoke tax collection software to reduce admin time for tax officials and bring tax procedures online, streamlining the system for citizens
  • Implementing a case and risk management framework that helps officials detect potential risk and thus minimise fraud
  • Training revenue officials to use the new system

Achieving operational acceptance

Operational acceptance was achieved in November 2013, meaning the software was rolled out across the country. This was swiftly followed by further recognition of the project’s value as it received the Outstanding International Collaboration Award at the British Expertise International Awards 2014 ceremony.
