Our solar expert Sarah Hare reflects on the positive impact solar energy has had upon remote health centres in Nigeria
When multiple stakeholders pull together, real change can happen: this is what Crown Agents’ procurement expert Giovanna Riggall has learned through giving over 25,000 patients access to solar energy in Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Kaduna State, Nigeria
Energy Access for Schools and Health Centres in Nigeria
In 2015, on behalf of Lagos State and DFID we procured and delivered complete PV solar component kits which were installed at 172 schools and 11 health centres, in Lagos State, Nigeria. This expanded energy access to over 200,000 students and users of health care services. Combined, the 183 systems have a total generating capacity of 4 MWp.
Following on from the Lagos solar project, DFID engaged Crown Agents to procure PV solar systems for 34 health centres in Kaduna State. Our expanded role in this project included end-to-end project and contract management. Our tasks included designing the terms of reference for and contracting, designers, project engineers and the civil, solar and electrical contractors.
