Nuclear safety

The very real threat to people and the environment from the nuclear legacy in the Former Soviet Union and elsewhere is acknowledged everywhere and is of great concern to many nations.

Countries, world-wide, have responded by making substantial financial commitments, either directly or through international funding institutions, to mitigate the related risks of nuclear proliferation, accidents and terrorism. Crown Agents has been providing specialist project management services supporting the design and implementation of these donor programmes continuously since 1993.

Work has been, and continues to be, undertaken, on projects in Russia, Ukraine and Georgia, concerned with ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants, the safe and secure storage of nuclear assets and radioactive materials, and the dismantlement of nuclear submarines.

The projects have been located on both military and civilian sites and have variously involved the procurement of safety equipment, the design and construction of storage facilities and physical protection systems, the conduct of related risk and environmental impact assessments, and the monitoring of dismantlement works and the safe disposal of related radioactive and other wastes.
