Strong and effective government institutions are a prerequisite for providing public services efficiently. The formal rules and processes are important, but the informal ones have a substantial impact on the ability of a government to meet the needs of its citizens.
The focus of our work on governance and public sector reform is on helping governments to improve performance, meet policy and service delivery goals efficiently, and be accountable and responsive to its citizens. We work with those responsible for setting and implementing government-wide policy and help ensure that the relevant cadres are recruited and are suitably trained. In doing so, we work with central government, line ministries and the judiciary in the following areas:
- Policy analysis and development
- Strategic planning
- Service delivery and monitoring performance
- Decentralisation
- Institutional and organisational development
- Capacity building, mentoring and training
In addition, we support governments in developing and implementing civil service-wide reforms including policies, human resource management and development, recruitment, retention and appraisal.
