Physical protection of Atomflot site

As part of a programme addressing nuclear safety and security issues in Russia, the Department for Energy and Climate Change (former BERR) is contributing to safe and secure storage of nuclear and radioactive material in NW Russia. Between 2001 and 2006 Crown Agents managed construction of a new storage facility at Atomflot's Murmansk site and improvement of its safety by

This project included:

- Constructing a new combined guard force central alarm station (CAS) building
- Fencing and gating an inner Local Zone (LZ). This will be fitted with detection devices which combined with those installed in the sterile zone will meet with the Russian requirements for high security zones.
- Installing a CCTV system and lighting on the LZ and access points and connection to the CAS.
All works were completed by July 2008.

Atomflot is a civilian site operating under the Russian State Corporation for Atomic Energy (Rosatom). The site is the operations' base for Russia's fleet of nuclear powered icebreakers and the sole site in NW Russia for transporting nuclear and radioactive materials, for both civilian and military nuclear fuel handling and decommissioning.
