Supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS through secure supply chains

01 December 2008

According to UNAIDS 2008 estimates, there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2007 some 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around 95% of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing nations which is where Crown Agents is working to make a difference. Crown Agents' health supply chain expertise and experience help our clients to build and sustain professional health supply systems and break out of the cycle of poverty.

We contribute to improved health care standards and help our clients to meet the Millennium Development Goals on child mortality, maternal health, HIV/AIDS and other diseases by providing integrated and secure health supply chain solutions, delivering tailored, flexible responses that ensure essential medical resources are delivered wherever they are needed, quickly and cost-effectively. This security of supply is particularly important for countries seeking to scale up and sustain comprehensive HIV/AIDS testing and treatment regimes.

Crown Agents works with bilateral and multilateral donors as well as public and private sector clients to build secure and reliable supply chains to deliver drugs, diagnostics, condoms and other essential commodities to support the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Using our health supply chain expertise, to date we have procured and delivered:

  • branded and generic ARVs worth $59 million and drugs to treat opportunistic infections worth $5.7 million since 2005;
  • 8.5 million HIV test kits; and
  • other HIV/AIDS commodities including 1.7 billion quality assured condoms since 1992.

We also work with medical supplies warehouses and local partners to prevent stockouts, conduct national quantifications to improve forecasting and ensure an un-interrupted supply of ARVs, and negotiate cheaper prices for AIDS drugs.

Crown Agents works with a range of clients and donors on HIV/AIDS prevention, diagnosis and treatment programmes in Africa, Asia and Latin America. To read more about our current and recent project click on the links to your right.
