Crown Agents has taken over the EC-funded Joint Management Unit (JMU) for nuclear safety projects in Russia. The unit promotes effective nuclear safety culture in line with the International Atomic Energy Agency Convention on Nuclear Safety's principles. A formal kick-off meeting was held 1 October 2007 at the EC Delegation to Russia.
The project's primary goal is providing project cycle management assistance to EuropeAid Co-operation Office's nuclear safety unit and to Rosatom for the EC nuclear safety programme in Russia. This includes disseminating EC nuclear safety-related information. We also maintain an information exchange website and are assisting Rosatom and the EC in preparations for implementing the New Instrument for Nuclear Safety.
The Joint Management Unit is an organisation based in Moscow. It was founded jointly by the European Commission and the Russian Federal Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom) to facilitate project cycle management of the European Commission programme in the field of Nuclear Safety in Russia. Under the Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation, established in 2007 after the end of Tacis programme, it is foreseen that the role of the JMU will be reinforced.
