The Mildmay centre is an independent non-profit organisation involved in the HIV/AIDS Management of both adults and children in Uganda. The centre was opened in 1998 under the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID) funding, with Crown Agents providing the financial management during the construction project, making payments to Uganda- based contractors on behalf of DFID.
Crown Agents has maintained a relationship with the centre over the years through the support of contributions from corporate events managed by the company's Charities Committee. As a result of these donations, the Mildmay Centre was able to feed 20 children living with HIV for 25 days. The food was provided to the children during their routine medical check up visits at Noah's Ark (The Children's Triage).
Our involvement with the centre continued earlier this year when staff from Crown Agents Uganda Ltd (CAUL) spent the afternoon there taking part in a tree planting activity. The event was part of an international effort by Crown Agents to support the United Nations led World Environment Day.
As Africa continues to suffer the effects of global warming and its dramatic impacts on health and the health provision services any attempt to contribute to the mitigation of climate change no matter how small, is significant . Dr Margaret Chan, Director- General of the World Health Organisation stated,
"The warming of the planet will be gradual, but the effects of extreme weather events -- more storms, floods, droughts and heat waves -- will be abrupt and acutely felt. Both trends can affect some of the most fundamental determinants of health: air, water, food, shelter and freedom from disease."
The efforts of CAUL demonstrate how Crown Agents continues to promote environmental initiatives across all our offices.
