HIV/AIDS prevention, diagnosis and treatment
According to UNAIDS/World Health Organisation (WHO), at the end of 2008, 33.4 million people were living with HIV/AIDS, more than half of whom are in Sub-Saharan Africa. Vital drugs for AIDS treatment in developing and transitional economies currently reach 4 million people in low and middle income countries.
Crown Agents works with bilateral and multilateral donors as well as public and private sector clients to build secure and reliable supply chains to deliver drugs, diagnostics and other essential commodities to support the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Using our health procurement expertise, to date we have procured and delivered:
- branded and generic ARVs worth $48 million since 2005
- 9.25 million HIV tests
- other HIV/AIDS commodities including 2.25 billion quality assured condoms since 1992.
We also work with medical supplies warehouses and local partners to prevent stockouts, conduct national quantifications to improve forecasting and ensure an uninterrupted supply of ARVs, and negotiate cheaper prices for AIDS drugs.
Crown Agents participates in a number of multiagency advisory bodies including WHO's AIDS Medicines and Diagnostic Service and WHO working groups, developing specifications and guidelines for procurement and quality control of condoms.
